Leadership tensions simmer within the Liberal Party as Sussan Ley faces internal criticism, but is this a genuine threat or just political posturing?
In a recent development that has sparked both concern and curiosity, Sussan Ley, the Liberal leader, has chosen to remain above the fray amidst growing speculation about her leadership. This comes after Senator Sarah Henderson, a vocal critic since being removed from the frontbench following the party’s May election defeat, openly expressed her dissatisfaction with Ley’s leadership. But here’s where it gets controversial: Henderson’s comments have ignited a debate about whether Ley is truly losing the support of her party or if this is merely a strategic move by disgruntled members.
During an interview with Sky News, Henderson declared, “It’s not OK … We’ve had this policy vacuum for too many months.” She went on to suggest that Ley’s leadership has led to a decline in party support, stating, “I do believe she is losing support because of what’s happened since she became leader.” However, when pressed for a response, Ley remained unfazed, refusing to engage in what she called “commentary on commentary.” Instead, she emphasized her focus on serving the Australian people and valuing her team, including Henderson. “In order to interrogate her view, you should probably ask her,” Ley remarked, deflecting the criticism with a calm professionalism.

Angus Taylor, who challenged Ley for the leadership position, expressed confidence in her ability to lead the party through to the next election. “I think Sussan is well established as leader,” Taylor stated. Similarly, Senator Jane Hume, another former frontbencher, disagreed with Henderson’s assessment, praising Ley’s consistency in messaging, particularly on the issue of emissions reduction. “She has said that we want lower emissions but not at any cost,” Hume noted, adding that Ley’s willingness to address these issues head-on is a positive step.
Other key figures, including deputy leader Ted O'Brien, Shadow Energy Minister Dan Tehan, and moderate MP Dave Sharma, have also voiced their support for Ley, dismissing Henderson’s critique as unfounded. Yet, the question remains: Is this unity genuine, or is it a temporary facade to avoid further internal strife?
Behind the scenes, speculation continues to swirl. While sources have downplayed the idea that Henderson’s comments are part of a coordinated effort to challenge Ley, the possibility of a leadership spill next year looms large if polling numbers do not improve. Shadow Environment Minister Angie Bell has called for patience, urging the party to give Ley “a fair go” and “12 months in the job to prosecute her case.” However, with internal divisions persisting and the party’s stance on net zero emissions still undecided, the future remains uncertain.
