Unveiling the Magic of Gert Voorjans: A Designer's Quest for Authenticity
In a world where globalization has led to a homogenized experience, Gert Voorjans, the creative force behind iconic interiors, is on a mission to redefine luxury. His latest project, The Silk Lakehouse, is a testament to his unique approach.
Voorjans, known for his work with Dries Van Noten and Joyce boutique, has spent five years crafting an ultra-luxury escape for the Shangri-La group. Nestled in the woods along West Lake, Hangzhou, this boutique hotel is a celebration of its surroundings.
"The sense of place is vital," Voorjans emphasizes. "When you travel, you want to feel the essence of where you are."
But here's where it gets controversial... In a world of generic luxury, Voorjans dares to be different. He believes in creating spaces that are authentic, individual, and deeply connected to their environment.
Take The Silk Lakehouse, for instance. With just 68 rooms, this intimate retreat is a far cry from the typical Shangri-La experience. Voorjans has mirrored the beauty of Hangzhou's nature into every aspect of the hotel - from the interiors to the amenities.
"Hangzhou is renowned for its natural splendor, especially the lotus flower. We wanted to bring that magic indoors," he explains.
And this is the part most people miss... Voorjans' attention to detail is unparalleled. He designed four unique room templates, each inspired by the local flora and fauna. From lotus flowers to willow leaves, every element tells a story.
"We eschewed the standard room category. Each space is a work of art, a celebration of nature's beauty."
But it's not just about aesthetics. Voorjans is a passionate advocate of color, believing it adds energy and vitality to a space.
"Gray and off-white are dull. I want to create spaces that are vibrant and full of life."
His 30-year journey designing for Dries Van Noten stores is a testament to his philosophy. He recalls, "When we opened the Paris store, other Dries locations wanted to replicate the look. But that's not my style. I believe in creating unique experiences tailored to each location."
Voorjans' work stands in contrast to other brands like Prada and Giorgio Armani, who favored uniformity across their stores. "It's boring and average. People crave diversity and authenticity."
Voorjans' focus is on blending heritage and modernity seamlessly. He insists, "It's not about living in the past. The challenge is for the new generation to redefine heritage in a fresh, contemporary way."
"Heritage is a rich resource, but it should be reimagined for today and tomorrow. I want to create something new and exciting, not retro or nostalgic."
As we explore Voorjans' world, we're left with a thought-provoking question: In a world that often romanticizes the past, how can we embrace heritage while staying true to our modern selves?
