Fiat CEO's Bold Proposal: Capping Car Speeds to Cut Costs (2026)

Fiat's CEO, Olivier François, has sparked a debate with his recent statement, proposing a unique solution to the rising costs of automotive safety features. He boldly suggests capping the top speed of Fiat's city cars, such as the 500, Panda, and Grande Panda, to a maximum of 73mph. This controversial idea aims to address the unnecessary hike in prices due to costly safety technology mandated by EU regulations.

François argues that most ADAS (Advanced Driver Assistance Systems) are designed for higher-speed scenarios, making them less relevant for urban driving. He believes that limiting the top speed of these cars could be a more cost-effective approach, especially considering that none of these models are officially capable of exceeding 100mph anyway.

"It's like overkill," François explains. "These small, affordable city cars are primarily used for commuting within urban areas, where speeds are generally much lower. Why should we burden young buyers with the cost of all this advanced hardware when it's not necessary for their daily driving needs?"

He welcomes the EU's proposed 'M1E' category for small cars, seeing it as a step towards recognizing that one-size-fits-all safety rules may not be the best approach for every segment.

"The current rules are unsustainable for city cars," he continues. "They've contributed to a 60% price increase over the last few years, making these cars less accessible to the very demographic they're designed for."

François's proposal to limit top speeds has divided opinions. While some agree that it could be a practical solution, others argue that it might compromise safety and limit the freedom of drivers.

What do you think? Is this a clever way to keep costs down, or does it sacrifice safety for the sake of affordability? Share your thoughts in the comments and let's discuss this intriguing idea further!
